Hebrews 1:1-4 Jesus the Son of God, God.
Back in the day, God spoke to the ancestors and prophets in bits and pieces, and by doing so, no one saw the complete expression of His person or glory. The Bible shows us how those who walked with God became his friends and knew His ways and how people knew God through experiences. So we will see the Old Testament filled with different names of God, as men named God as He revealed Himself. They acknowledged the Supremeness in His name, Yahweh, and received every expressed version of God. Then thousands of years later, according to God’s plan, He changed the playbook humans were used to by physically introducing His Son to the scene. The Son shows the glory of God. He is a perfect copy of God’s nature (v. 3b).
In v2-4, God (the Father) tells us distinct things about the Son.
The Son owns as an inheritance everything we see and do not see.
The universe and all creation were made through the Son.
The Son radiates God’s glory.
The Son expresses the very character of God.
The Son sustains everything by the mighty power of his command.
The Son has cleansed us from our sins.
The Son sits down in the place of honour at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.
The Son is far greater than the angels.
The name God gave the Son is greater than the name of angels.
Hebrews 1:5–14 Jesus is superior to angels.
As I read this chapter for this study, I asked God why He had to make it clear to the early church that Jesus was superior to the angels. In Colossians 2:18, God warned the Christians about false humility and angel worship. Unsurprisingly, the problem still exists today.
It was important to establish the Son of God as God, because once we accept that, it’s the foundation for everything else we know of the supernatural. The Son is superior to the angels because he has been established as the Son by the Father (Psalms 2:6-7). He is called the firstborn to show His supremacy over all of creation. The position of firstborn speaking to His preeminence in rank (Colossians 1:15-19), whether to prophets through whom God spoke in the Old Testament or to angels who are His ministering servants to do His bidding in heaven and on earth (v6-7, 14, Deuteronomy 34:43, Revelation 5:13, 4:9-11, Psalms 103:20). He is called Begotten because He is of the same nature as the Father, his express image, as we are told in verse 3.
Other Important Notes
There won’t be any new revelation about God outside of what He has said and brought to perfection in His Son. There won’t be any new revelation about God (at least on this side of eternity) that is not already recorded in the Bible. If anyone claims to have a revelation and has no scriptural backing, then it is not of God. As Christians, it’s our responsibility to be careful what we believe.
I have never seen anywhere in the Bible where men who walked with God commanded angels to do their bidding, so it makes sense to see that scripture says they are sent to do God’s bidding and that God gives His angels charge over us. Where the service of angels is concerned, we have only one assignment: to trust that God will send them to minister exactly as is fitting for our journey, and so when we pray, we simply pray his word concerning the ministry of angels in our lives rather than command angels.
Love,
Osi
